Tap the block, go off
The apps you chose lock, and only tapping the block again unlocks them. Leave the block in another room, and unlocking means getting up and walking there. Distance, not willpower, puts the phone down.
Getting started
- Screen Time permission — off locks apps with iOS Screen Time. Allow it when you first open the app.
- Register your block — tap 'Register block' and touch the top of your iPhone to the block. Only the registered block can turn off on and off.
- Modes — decide which apps lock for what you're doing: Focus, Sleep, and so on. Tap the pencil on the selected mode to edit it.
- off — tap 'Tap the block' and touch the block. The apps you chose lock. Tap again to unlock.
Frequently asked questions
What is a block? Do I need one?
off calls any small object with an NFC tag inside a 'block'. Any off-the-shelf NFC tag (NTAG213, 215 or 216) can be registered. Without a block you can't turn off on or off — that's the whole point of the app.
I lost my block.
Settings ▸ Emergency unlock lets you unlock without the block. Hold for 3 seconds. You get only 5 emergency unlocks, ever. Afterwards, use Settings ▸ Remove block and register a new one.
What happens when I open a locked app?
You see a screen that says "You're off right now. Tap the block to unlock." The app doesn't open.
How do schedules work?
In Settings ▸ Schedules, pick days, times and a mode, and off turns on automatically at those times. Tap the block to end early — only this occurrence ends, and it locks again at the same time the next day. A schedule must be at least 15 minutes.
I can't delete apps while off.
If Settings ▸ 'Block app deletion while off' is on, no app on the iPhone — not just off — can be deleted while off. That's how iOS works. Tap the block to end off and you can delete apps again.
Can I share a block with family or friends?
Yes. Register the same block on each iPhone. At the table or in a meeting, everyone taps the same block to go off, and must tap again to unlock.
The block won't read.
Hold the top edge of your iPhone (by the camera) right against the block. Thick cases or metal surfaces can get in the way. Also check that NFC is on in the Settings app.
Where does my data go?
Nowhere. There's no account and no server; your locked-app list and history stay on your iPhone. The Privacy Policy has the details.
