ensōOne stroke a day

One habit.
66 days. One stroke a day.

Press and hold the circle to draw today’s stroke. After 66 days, a circle of your own remains, empty days and all.

In the works

While you hold

You don’t tap a button.
You draw a stroke.

Hold the circle and the brush moves across today’s place. The haptics grow stronger under your finger, and the stroke settles when you reach the end. Let go early and the ink draws back.

Holding the circle: ink spreads as the first stroke is drawnDay 41 drawn: the number darkens and a red dot appears

It does six things.

  • One habit, one cue

Keep it small enough to finish in two minutes, and tie it to something you already do, like “after making morning coffee.”

  • One stroke a day

66 days share one circle. Days drawn in a row become one unbroken stroke.

  • A new line every day

A different line keeps you company on each of the 66 days. Miss a day and it never blames you.

  • Right from the reminder

The day’s line arrives at the time you chose. Press and hold it and choose Done, without opening the app.

  • Journal and notes

See 66 dots and the lines you left. If you did it yesterday but forgot to draw, you get one more chance.

  • Widgets and Lock Screen

Meet your circle and today’s line on the Home Screen and Lock Screen.

After 66 days

Empty days and all,
the circle is yours.

After 66 days, a red seal is stamped. Everyone’s empty days fall in different places, so no two circles are alike. Keep it as a single image on paper, and past circles hang together in a quiet gallery.

Why 66 days.

On average, it took 66 days for a new behavior to become automatic. That comes from a 2009 study by Lally and colleagues at University College London, who followed people’s new habits for 12 weeks. It ranged from 18 to 254 days, so 66 is a reference point, not a promise.

The same study found that missing a single day barely affected habit formation. So ensō never erases your circle when you miss a day. There is just one rule: don’t miss twice in a row.

What it does not do.

Anything you don’t need to keep one habit for 66 days, we left out.

FAQ

What if I miss a day?

That day stays as an empty space in the circle, and the circle carries on. The next day, the app greets you with words for that moment. If you did it but forgot to draw, you can draw yesterday’s stroke once from the journal.

Can I track more than one habit?

One at a time. Keeping one habit for 66 days lasts longer than starting several and dropping them after a week. When the circle closes, start the next habit with a new circle.

When does a new day start?

At 4 a.m. A stroke at 1 a.m. still counts for today.

What happens after 66 days?

You can keep your sealed circle as an image on paper. When you start a new circle, the old one hangs in Past circles in Settings.

Which languages?

For now we are making it in Korean. The screens on this page are from the Korean app.
